Our estate

The History

Established in 2001, I Greppi Estate was founded on a vision of Bolgheri’sexceptional winemaking potential. Covering 37 hectares, with 26 planted undervine, the estate spans the central and northern sections of the DOC areabetween the historic hilltop villages of Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci, just100 km southwest of Florence. In 2017, the McMahon family acquired theestate, bringing their geological expertise and a deep appreciation for theregion’s unique climate and terroir. The vineyards are primarily composed ofsandy soils, offering excellent drainage and natural resistance to pests likephylloxera. Additionally, I Greppi owns two other vineyards within the DOC,where clay-rich soils contribute to greater complexity and balance in the wines. This diversity of terroir is key to crafting wines that truly reflect the essence ofBolgheri.

The Lakes

At the heart of the estate, two man-made lakes play a vital role inregulating the vineyard’s climate, ensuring optimal grape maturation. These lakes provide a crucial watersource during the heat of summer, while also stabilizing temperaturesyear-round—preventing excessivedrops in winter and moderating theheat in warmer months. Onparticularly hot days, our vineyardsare often 2–3ºC cooler than the restof the DOC, helping to preserveacidity and freshness. This naturalbalance has become a definingcharacteristic of our wines, contributing to their vibrancy andelegance.

Bolgheri is a small but extraordinary wine region, situated on the Tuscan coast just 70 km south of Pisa. Framed by the Colline Metallifere to the east and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, the landscape forms a natural amphitheater that fosters a distinctive coastal Mediterranean climate. This unique microclimate provides ideal conditions for cultivating exceptional grapes, particularly international varieties that have defined the renowned “Super-Tuscan” style of red wines.
